Appropriate Adult Scheme

Contact: Les Board, Social Club Co-ordinator

The Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 made it a legal requirement that all mentally disordered or otherwise mentally vulnerable persons in police detention must have an 'Appropriate Adult' present when the detainee is given their rights, interviewed and for certain other procedures.

Mind coordinate a team of volunteers who respond to requests from Hillingdon Police for an 'Appropriate Adult'. The volunteers must be responsible adults aged 18 or over who are not police officers or employed by the police.

This is a very interesting and rewarding role which benefits not only the detained person but also Hillingdon Police. Full training and expenses are provided to volunteers who must be able to attend Custody Suites at Uxbridge, West Drayton and Heathrow Police Stations.
